Coaches
The Driving Force Behind our Champions
Our coaches are the backbone of our club. Committed to helping members reach their personal paddling goals, these are the people who create excellence in athletes everyday. Whether they’re looking to improve basic boat skills, increasing general fitness or compete for Canada at Junior and Senior international events, our coaches are there to see them through to the end. We’re proud to present our amazing team of qualified coaches.

Doug Tutty
HEAD COACH
Doug Tutty has been part of Missy since 1982, first as a young paddler and later as a dedicated coach. A Level 4 NCCP certified coach and National Coaching Institute graduate, Doug has coached at MCC for over 20 years and led Canadian National teams at major international competitions. He believes in helping athletes reach their full potential, whether racing locally or on the world stage. For Doug, the best part of the sport is the friendships, challenges, and lifelong skills it fosters. A lifelong paddler, he also enjoys training and racing in Outrigger with friends at Missy.

Rob Smith
HIGH-PERFORMANCE COACH
Rob Smith began paddling at age 12 at the Mohawk Canoe Club after moving from Montreal. Starting in canoe, he later transitioned to kayak and began coaching at 16, realizing it was his passion. Over the years, he has coached at Burloak, West Rouge, and Missy, helping develop top Canadian athletes, including National Champions and Olympians. After a 22-year break in the restaurant business, Rob returned to coaching at South Niagara and Burloak, leading athletes to Junior Worlds and Olympic Hopes. He believes success comes from belief, proper goal-setting, and dedicated training.

Carrie Buday
HIGH-PERFORMANCE COACH
Carrie Buday started paddling at MCC at age 12, despite not enjoying it at first. A talented hockey and soccer player, she chose sprint kayaking with a goal of reaching the Olympics—going on to compete at two Olympic Games, multiple World Championships, and World Cups during her decade with the National Team. She trained at both MCC and Burloak, finishing her career where it began. Now coaching alongside her former Olympic coaches, Rob Smith and Doug Tutty, Carrie is excited to mentor the next generation of paddlers.

Hayley Tutty
YOUTH RACING COORDINATOR
Hayley Tutty discovered paddling at MCC at 15, after years of competitive gymnastics and quickly found it to be the perfect fit. She has since competed in sprint canoe and outrigger, enjoying training and racing alongside friends and family. With experience coaching gymnastics, skiing, cooking, and paddling, she is passionate about creating a supportive and fun environment for young athletes. This summer, Hayley looks forward to helping kids develop their skills, challenge themselves, and make lasting memories on the water.
